Here are some quick tips to help you be safe while hiking this summer:

  • Carry a headlamp or flashlight on every hike, even short day hikes. Should the weather change drastically or you get lost, the light will help illuminate your footsteps.
  • Carry and drink plenty of water. We recommend a minimum of one quart every two hours. Staying hydrated will help reduce injuries.
  • Wear sturdy footwear with good traction. This might save an ankle from a sprain or break. Replace your hiking shoes when you notice frayed laces, a cracked midsole, loose eyelets, worn tread, or you experience discomfort when hiking.
  • Minor/moderate health or medical issues can be easily exacerbated by hiking — know your limits and pay attention to your body’s signals.
  • Stay on the established trails on all hikes. Straying from the trail may result in getting lost and will make locating you much more difficult.
  • When hiking in a group, each member of the group should carry some water and food in case the party becomes separated. The group should also establish a meet up place and time if anyone becomes separated.
